Term 4

Welcome back to our final term for 2018. The year has raced by. We welcome our new learners to Room 26 and Madeleine Lifsey who is their teacher. We also welcome back
Kerry Hales who is teaching in Rooms 23 and 26.
Hats and Change of Clothing
Term 4 sees the return of Balmoral School hats. All children are required to wear a hat when
outdoors at school. Please help your child to bring their hat to school each day.
Alternatively, they can leave their hat at school in their classroom. A change of clothes is
also useful, especially when the children explore messy and water play. We do not have a
supply of spare clothes at school.
Play Based Learning/Inquiry
Our classrooms are a buzz with Play alongside classroom Inquiries. Each class has a
Classroom Learning Journal that tracks their Inquiry. Please take time to have a look the
next time you are in your child’s classroom.
PE
This term the school pool is open for the children. Your child’s teacher will advise you of
their class swimming times. Later in the term we will be doing an athletics unit, culminating in a fun athletics morning on Monday 10 December. More information to follow.
Taakaro
Our format for Taakaro has changed this term. We will be doing Taakaro on Thursday
mornings on odd weeks - October 18, November 1, 15, 29.
Keeping Ourselves Safe
We will be teaching this programme during the term.This programme has been developed
by the New Zealand Police.The children will  learn how to keep themselves safe and who to
ask for help if they think they are in an unsafe situation.
Cornwall Park Picnic - Friday 7 December
We will round off our year with our annual picnic at Cornwall Park. More details will follow.

Focus on Fractions for Maths and in Play.

 Did you know that being able to share things out equally is fundamental to learning about Fractions and Multiplication? During play for the first two weeks of Term 2, teachers provided play opportunities to explore fractional concepts. At the playdough table, Jonathan started the game "Tacos". The muffin paper (imagined taco), prompted lots of conversation about halves. The children agreed that the halves had to be equal and that meant the same size when they folded the muffin cups/taco. The sides had to meet exactly. The game lasted for quite a while and many children came to take part. They practised their counting along the way. Teachers asked questions like: How many children are here? How many tacos each? Will that be equal?   Baskets of objects and containers with 2, 3, or 4 divisions inspired a shop run by Zoey, Olive, Ting Ting, and Isobel. Ngā mihi nui from Whānau Koru Term 3  Welcome to all new tamariki and whanau who have joined our Balmoral school community this term. A big welcome back also to Cheryl who is teaching our newest tamariki in the Mototapu Room. The Milk and Cookies Evening, which took place in August, was a chance for whānau to read favourite stories and discover new ones together. We held this year’s celebration of books and reading in the Library for the first time and the children arrived in their pyjamas to twinkling lights, lots of little nooks to snuggle into with their books and an enticing supply of cookies and milk.
